Organic hair colours are the beauty secret that some hairdressers don’t want you to know about

Black is great, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a change in hair colours now and then. Dyeing our hair a different colour, whether you’re going for something bold like lavender or more work-appropriate like brown, can still make us feel refreshed whenever we look in the mirror.

We’re sure nobody would be able to deny that it is incredible time-consuming and expensive to upkeep a dye job, however. Whether you need to touch up your roots, or whether your dry-as-grass hair needs some intensive hair treatments after all the chemicals and heat you’ve subjected it to, all roads lead to a burnt wallet in this case.

Or do they?

There’s a hair colouring secret that your hairdresser probably doesn’t want you to know about, and we’ve found out what it is.

Welcome to the world of organic hair colours

Synthetic, harsh colouring chemicals have become notorious for drying out hair and even causing chemical burns to scalps if you’re going for a particularly light colour and require a lot of bleaching.

Natural, organic hair colours are the best of both worlds: they are gentle on your hair and scalp, while also helping you achieving the same deliciously vivid hues on your hair. The icing on the cake here is that they’re also safe and easy to use at home by yourself, and don’t even require a trip to the hair salon.

See why they’re such a well-kept beauty secret now?

Organic hair colours are made from natural ingredients so they don’t burn the skin or the hair strands. The hair colours can safely touch your scalp without any pain or drying effect, so any one could easily use it at home without any special care or technique.

Here’s the cincher that you never expected: organic hair colours can achieve even more vibrant colours than non-organic dyes!

Not all organic hair colours are created equal

If you’re about to head out and change your hair dyeing regimen to organic dyes, you need to keep reading.

Not all organic hair colours are created equal: that means that amongst brands that label themselves as ‘organic’, some are still better for your hair and scalp than others.

What you need to look out for is whether the organic hair colour in question contains an ingredient called resorcinol.

Resorcinol is a chemical very commonly found in many colouring and bleaching agents, but it’s got some significant negative side effects.

According to the Environmental Working Group, resorcinol is “a skin irritant that is toxic to the immune system and a frequent cause of hair dye allergy.”

In fact, “resorcinol can disrupt thyroid hormone synthesis” as well. This means that in the long term, this could lead to excessive growth of thyroid tissue, leading to hyperthyroidism and goiter, a swelling in the neck.

It’s unclear how big a health concern this is, as the U.S.A. FDA does not have any regulation for the levels of resorcinol found in personal care products, such as hair dyes.

THIS HAIR COLOURING BRAND IS ORGANIC AND FREE FROM RESORCINOL

If you’d like to avoid all the scalp irritation and possibility of thyroid problems in the future, it’s important to find a brand that’s not just organic but also free from resorcinol as well. One prime example is Naturigin, an award-winning organic hair colour brand from Denmark.

Resorcinol is usually used to produce green tones in hair dyes (which may be present, even if you’re buying a brown colour!) and in order to avoid using that, Naturigin actually replaces it with much more high quality ingredients.

Just take a look at their ingredients list to see how organic it is:

  • Citrus Nobilis oil (from Mandarin orange)

  • Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil (from Sunflower)

  • Citrus Medica Limonum Oil (from Lemon)

  • Protein Hydrolysates (from Soy)

  • Butyrospermum PArkii Butter (from Shea Butter)

  • Prunus Armeniaca Kernel Oil (from Apricot)

  • Citrus Grandis Oil (from Grapefruit)

  • Prunus Persica Kernel Oil (From Peach)

  • Vitis Vinifera Seed Oil (from Grape)

  • Simmondsia Chinensis Oil (from Jojoba)

  • Triticum Vulgare Bran Extract (from Wheat)

  • Aloe Barbadensis Extract (from Aloe)

You can see how most of the ingredients in the hair dye is actually taken from flower and fruit extracts, which means that they’re able to produce highly vibrant colours that even non-organic colours aren’t able to achieve.

Naturigin hair colours retail for SGD35 per box, which makes it a much more affordable and convenient solution compared to getting your hair dyed or touched up at hair salons. Prices at hair salons can go range anywhere between SGD100 to 500 for hair colouring, and you may not even be getting as good a quality of hair dye as with Naturigin!

The price also makes it very similar to high-quality DIY hair dyes in drugstores these days, except its ingredients are much gentler on the scalp and lets you achieve beautiful but still gorgeously healthy tresses.

Naturigin comes in a full array of 19 colours, which you can use to dye your full head of hair at home for a refreshing new look, touch up your roots from an existing dye job, or cover up your gray hair.

These colours are:

  • Naturigin 2.0 Black

  • Naturigin 2.3 Ebony

  • Naturigin 3.0 Dark Coffee Brown
